Commercial Cheese Graters in Toronto & Canada
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions we hear from operators.
What's the difference between a light-duty and heavy-duty electric cheese grater?
Light-duty cheese graters, like our smaller Omcan 0.75 and 1.5 HP models, suit a restaurant or deli shredding cheese in smaller batches throughout the day. Heavy-duty graters, like Omcan's 2 and 4 HP models and Globe's 2 and 3 HP shredders, handle continuous, high-volume shredding for a pizzeria or commissary running through full blocks of cheese at a time. We carry both duty tiers, so you can match the machine to how much cheese you're actually going through.
Can a commercial cheese grater shred anything besides cheese?
Most commercial cheese graters can handle other firm foods too — bread for breadcrumbs, nuts, and some vegetables like carrots can go through the same grating drum, though the machine is built and sized around cheese specifically. Swapping in a different drum or disc, where available, can widen what it handles, but always check your model's manual before running anything besides cheese through it, since drum sizes and grate patterns vary by machine. Our Omcan and Globe lineups are both purpose-built primarily for cheese.
How do I clean a commercial cheese grater?
A commercial cheese grater should be broken down and cleaned after every use — cheese residue left in the grating drum dries hard and attracts bacteria if it sits. Most of our Omcan and Globe cheese graters have removable drums and guards that come apart without tools, making daily teardown and sanitizing straightforward. Regular cleaning also keeps the grating surface sharp, so cheese shreds cleanly instead of clumping or tearing.
