What are French plates on an Imperial electric range?

French plates are solid round cast iron cooking surfaces heated by electric elements underneath. They hold heat well, spread it evenly across the bottom of the pan, and wipe clean easily since there are no open coils or grates. Imperial's IR-4-E has four French plates over a space saver oven, and the IR-6-E has six over a standard oven, both with infinite heat controls.
