    Do you need ledges?

    Yes, yes you do because things may fall over the side of the shelves and that's not good for anybody.
    Once the ledge is installed, it's less than 10 centimeters or 4 inches tall, so it's important to take into account things that may flip over the ledge.
    I'd like for the ledge to look the same when installed on either side, as the current design is not symmetrical. But that's just me. It works. I'm not complaining.
